Free Image to Grayscale Converter Online — Black & White Filter
Convert any color photo to professional-quality grayscale in one click. Supports JPG, PNG and WebP. No quality loss, no software, no account.
Grayscale vs black & white: what is the difference?
Grayscale (also called greyscale) preserves all 256 shades of gray between pure black and pure white — producing a natural, photographically accurate representation of the original color image. This is what photographers mean by a "black and white" photograph. Pure black & white (bitmap) reduces every pixel to either completely black or completely white, with no intermediate shades — creating a high-contrast graphic effect similar to a newspaper print or QR code. Our converter produces grayscale (photographic) output by default.
Why convert images to grayscale?
Reduced file size: grayscale images contain one color channel instead of three (RGB), resulting in smaller file sizes — up to 3x smaller for PNG. Professional printing: preparing images for monochrome laser printing or newspaper reproduction. Artistic effect: classic black and white portrait and landscape photography. OCR preparation: grayscale images often improve text recognition accuracy in OCR software. Accessibility: testing how an interface looks for color-blind users.
FAQ
Do image dimensions change after grayscale conversion?
No. Width, height and resolution are preserved exactly. Only the color information is removed.
Can I convert back to color after grayscale?
No. Converting to grayscale permanently removes color information. The original color data cannot be recovered from the grayscale output.
Does the grayscale conversion use a specific luminance formula?
Yes. We use the standard ITU-R BT.601 luminance formula: 0.299×R + 0.587×G + 0.114×B — the same used by Photoshop and most professional tools. It weights green most heavily because the human eye is most sensitive to green light.
Will the file size be smaller after conversion?
For PNG: yes, significantly — grayscale PNG uses one channel vs three. For JPEG: slightly smaller, since grayscale data compresses more efficiently.
Can I convert photos in batch?
Yes. Upload up to 20 images and convert them all to grayscale at once. Download individually or as a ZIP.
Does grayscale conversion affect transparency in PNG?
No. PNG transparency (alpha channel) is preserved after grayscale conversion.
