What makes a password truly secure?
Length: the most important factor. Every additional character exponentially increases the number of possible combinations. A 12-character password with all character types has ~3 × 10^23 combinations — uncrackable by current computers. A 16-character password has ~7 × 10^31 combinations. Randomness: human-chosen passwords follow predictable patterns (birth years, pet names, dictionary words + numbers). True random generation eliminates all patterns. Uniqueness: each account must have a completely different password — if one service is breached, other accounts remain safe. A password manager makes this practical.
Password security best practices
Generate a unique password for every account — never reuse. Store all passwords in a password manager (Bitwarden is free and open-source, 1Password and Dashlane are excellent paid options). Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever available — even if your password is compromised, 2FA prevents unauthorized access. Never share passwords by email or chat — use your password manager's secure sharing feature. Change passwords immediately if a service announces a data breach.

Is the password generated in my browser or on a server?
100% in your browser using the Web Crypto API (window.crypto.getRandomValues). The generated password is never sent to FileSwiftly servers. Zero network request is made during generation.
How random are the generated passwords?
We use the browser's cryptographically secure random number generator (CSPRNG) — the same entropy source used by secure applications like encrypted messaging apps. This is true randomness, not a pseudo-random algorithm.
What character sets are available?
Uppercase letters (A-Z), lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), and symbols (!@#$%^&*()_+-=[]{}|;:,.<>?). Toggle each set individually to match password policy requirements.
Can I exclude ambiguous characters (0, O, l, I)?
Yes. Enable the "exclude ambiguous characters" option to avoid characters that look similar — useful for passwords that may need to be read aloud or typed manually.
What password length should I use?
16 characters minimum for important accounts (banking, email, cloud storage). 12 characters for less critical accounts. Use the maximum length allowed by the service for best security.
Should I use a passphrase instead of a random password?
Passphrases (4+ random words like "correct-horse-battery-staple") are memorable and strong. Random character passwords are stronger per character but harder to type. Both are excellent — use whichever your setup supports.
