Free AI Grammar Checker Online — Check and Fix English Grammar
Instantly detect and correct grammar, spelling, punctuation and style errors in your English text. AI-powered, free, private — no account, no browser extension needed.
What errors does the grammar checker detect?
Grammar: subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, article usage (a/an/the), preposition errors, dangling modifiers, run-on sentences and comma splices. Spelling: typos, commonly confused homophones (their/there/they're, affect/effect, your/you're) and regional spelling variants (colour/color). Punctuation: missing commas, incorrect apostrophes, misplaced semicolons, quotation mark style. Style suggestions: passive voice reduction, wordiness, redundant phrases, unclear pronoun references and readability improvements.
AI grammar checking vs rule-based tools
Traditional grammar checkers (like early Grammarly or Microsoft Word's built-in checker) use rule-based algorithms — they catch clear violations of grammar rules but struggle with context and nuance. AI grammar checkers understand sentences as a whole, catching errors that only make sense in context (e.g. "The data shows..." vs "The data show..." — both grammatically arguable depending on style guide). Our AI also handles idiomatic expressions, regional English variants (British vs American) and code-switching more accurately than rule-based tools.
When to use a grammar checker
Before sending important emails (especially to clients, recruiters or senior stakeholders). Before publishing blog posts, articles or social media content. After writing a first draft quickly without self-editing. For non-native English speakers polishing business communications. Before submitting academic assignments (always check your institution's AI policy). For proofreading legal or contractual documents as a first pass (always follow up with a human proofreader).
FAQ
Does it support British English and American English?
Yes. Specify your preferred English variant (British or American) and the checker will flag inconsistencies accordingly — e.g. "colour" is correct in British English but flagged in American English mode.
Is there a character limit?
Up to 5,000 characters per check. For longer documents, check in sections.
Will it flag technical jargon or specialized vocabulary?
The AI recognizes common technical terminology in IT, medical, legal and scientific contexts. Very niche jargon may occasionally be flagged as an error — use the context to decide whether to accept the suggestion.
Is my text stored or used for training?
No. Text is processed in real-time and immediately discarded. Your content is never stored or used for AI model training.
Can it check grammar in languages other than English?
Currently optimized for English. Basic French, Spanish and German grammar checking is supported but at lower accuracy than English.
Does it suggest style improvements beyond grammar?
Yes. Beyond grammar corrections, it flags passive voice overuse, wordy phrases, cliches and readability issues — similar to the style suggestions in Grammarly Premium.
