Free Word Counter Online — Count Words, Characters and Reading Time
Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs in real time. Get an estimated reading time and speaking time. Works in your browser — no account, no upload.
All metrics explained
Word count: total words (sequences of characters separated by whitespace and punctuation). Characters with spaces: total characters including spaces — what Twitter, LinkedIn and SMS limits count. Characters without spaces: total non-whitespace characters. Sentences: segments ending with . ! or ?. Paragraphs: text blocks separated by blank lines. Reading time: estimated at 200-250 words per minute (average adult silent reading). Speaking time: estimated at 130-150 words per minute (average presentation pace). Unique words: number of distinct words (approximates vocabulary richness).
Platform-specific character limits
Keep these limits in mind while writing: Twitter/X: 280 characters (URLs count as 23). Meta description (SEO): 155-160 characters for optimal display. LinkedIn post: 3,000 characters (700 visible before "see more"). LinkedIn headline: 220 characters. Instagram caption: 2,200 characters (125 visible). SMS: 160 characters (Latin script) or 70 characters (Unicode/emoji — uses a different encoding). Google Ads headline: 30 characters. Email subject line: 40-60 characters recommended for mobile display.
FAQ
Are characters counted with or without spaces?
Both are displayed: "Characters (with spaces)" and "Characters (without spaces)". Twitter and LinkedIn use the with-spaces count for their limits.
How is reading time calculated?
Based on 238 words per minute — the average silent reading speed for adults according to research. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute for a standard presentation pace.
Does it count emojis as characters?
Yes. Each emoji counts as 1-2 characters depending on the platform. Twitter counts standard emoji as 1 character; some complex emoji sequences count as 2.
Does it count words in multiple languages?
Yes. The counter uses whitespace and punctuation to delimit words — this works for all Latin-script languages. Chinese, Japanese and other character-based languages count each character as a word, which may not reflect actual word count.
Is there a text length limit?
No. The counter processes text of any length directly in your browser — no upload to a server. Very large texts (millions of words) may slow browser performance slightly.
Can I save or export the count results?
Copy the count summary from the results panel. Export to PDF or CSV is planned for a future update.
