Barcode format guide
EAN-13: the global standard for retail product barcodes (GS1). 13-digit numeric code. Used on virtually all consumer products sold in stores worldwide outside North America. UPC-A: the North American retail standard (GS1-US). 12-digit numeric code — functionally identical to EAN-13 for modern scanners. EAN-8: shortened EAN for small packaging where a full EAN-13 barcode is too large. Code 128: alphanumeric, high-density barcode. Used in logistics, shipping labels, inventory management and healthcare. Code 39: older alphanumeric barcode (uppercase letters, numbers, some symbols). Still widely used in aerospace, defense and automotive industries due to its broad scanner compatibility.
PNG vs SVG: which format to choose
PNG: raster image at a specific resolution. Best for printing at a fixed size on labels, packaging and documents where size is predetermined. For print barcodes, export at 300 DPI minimum. Scaling up a PNG produces pixelation. SVG: vector format that scales to any size without quality loss. Best for digital assets, web use, design files and anywhere the barcode will be resized. Import SVG into Illustrator, Figma, InDesign or any vector editor while preserving perfect edges at any size.
FAQ
Do I need a GS1 license to generate EAN-13 barcodes?
To sell products in retail stores with GS1-standard barcodes, you need a GS1 Company Prefix license. For internal use (inventory management, warehouse labeling, prototypes), you can generate barcodes freely without a license.
What DPI should I use for a printable barcode?
Minimum 300 DPI for standard barcode sizes. 600 DPI for small barcodes (under 2cm wide) to ensure scanner readability. Export PNG at the target physical size × DPI.
Can generated barcodes be scanned by a phone camera?
Yes. Code 128, Code 39 and EAN-13 barcodes can be scanned by any barcode scanner app on iOS and Android.
What is the difference between a barcode and a QR code?
Traditional barcodes are 1D (one-dimensional) — a series of parallel lines encoding data in one axis. QR codes are 2D (two-dimensional) — a matrix of dots encoding data in both axes, storing much more information and readable from any orientation.
Can I generate a barcode from text or alphanumeric data?
Yes. Code 128 and Code 39 support alphanumeric characters (letters + numbers). EAN-13 and UPC-A are numeric only.
Is the barcode compliant with international scanning standards?
Yes. All generated barcodes comply with their respective ISO/IEC specifications and are readable by industry-standard barcode scanners.
