How to Sign a PDF Online for Free — Electronic Signature
Add your legally valid electronic signature to any PDF — draw, type or upload your signature. Place it precisely, add text fields or initials, and download instantly. No account, no subscription.
Three ways to create your signature
Draw: sign naturally with your mouse on desktop or your finger on a touchscreen — ideal for creating an authentic-looking signature. Type: enter your name and choose from multiple calligraphic font styles that simulate a handwritten signature — fast and consistent. Upload: photograph or scan your physical signature on white paper, upload the image, and the tool automatically removes the background to create a clean transparent PNG ready to place on any document.
Legal validity — what you need to know
FileSwiftly's electronic signature is classified as a Simple Electronic Signature (SES) under the EU eIDAS regulation — legally binding for contracts, quotations, purchase orders, NDAs, rental agreements, internal approvals and most commercial documents. For higher legal assurance (qualified electronic signatures for government filings or court documents), services like DocuSign, Adobe Sign or national PKI systems are required. In the USA, SES meets the ESIGN Act and UETA standards.
Add text, dates and initials
Beyond the main signature, you can add text fields (printed name, date, job title, company), initials (for multi-page documents requiring acknowledgment on each page) and checkboxes. All elements are dragged to the exact position needed on any page. Multiple signers can each add their signature in sequence by re-uploading the partially signed PDF.
FAQ
Is a FileSwiftly electronic signature legally binding?
Yes for the vast majority of commercial and administrative documents. It constitutes a Simple Electronic Signature (SES level 1) under EU eIDAS, valid in all 27 EU member states plus the USA (ESIGN Act), UK, Canada and most countries worldwide.
Can I sign multiple pages?
Yes. Navigate between pages and place your signature, initials or text fields on as many pages as needed before downloading the final signed PDF.
Is my signature image stored on FileSwiftly servers?
No. Your signature is processed in-browser for drawn and typed signatures. Any uploaded signature image is processed on our servers and deleted within 1 hour along with the signed PDF.
Can I sign a PDF on my iPhone or Android?
Yes. The drawn signature works with your finger on any mobile touchscreen. No app required — works in Safari, Chrome and Firefox mobile.
Can multiple people sign the same document?
For sequential signing, each signer downloads the partially-signed PDF and re-uploads it to add their own signature. For parallel or verified multi-party signing workflows, a dedicated e-signature platform is recommended.
What PDF size limit applies for signing?
PDFs up to 100 MB are supported for signing.
