Metric vs imperial: a practical guide

The world is divided between the metric system (SI) — used by most countries — and the imperial/US customary system — used primarily in the United States, with partial use in the UK. Key conversions: 1 inch = 2.54 cm; 1 mile = 1.609 km; 1 pound = 0.453 kg; 1 gallon (US) = 3.785 liters; 1 gallon (UK) = 4.546 liters. Note: US and UK "gallons" are different — always specify which system when communicating internationally to avoid costly errors (NASA's Mars Climate Orbiter was lost in 1999 due to a metric/imperial unit confusion).

Temperature conversions explained

Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply by 9/5, then add 32. So 20°C = (20 × 9/5) + 32 = 68°F. Fahrenheit to Celsius: subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. So 98.6°F = (98.6 - 32) × 5/9 = 37°C (normal body temperature). Kelvin: the scientific absolute temperature scale. 0K = absolute zero (-273.15°C). Kelvin is used in physics, chemistry and astrophysics. Water freezes at 273.15K (0°C) and boils at 373.15K (100°C).

FAQ

Can I convert temperature units?

Yes. Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin are all supported. Enter any value in any unit and the converter shows all three simultaneously.

Does it support data storage conversions (GB, TB, GiB)?

Yes. Bits, bytes, kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), terabytes (TB) and their binary equivalents (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB). Note: 1 GB = 1,000 MB (decimal), while 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB (binary) — operating systems and hard drive manufacturers use different conventions.

How accurate are the conversions?

All conversions use exact mathematical factors defined by international standards (ISO 80000, NIST). Results are displayed to 6 significant figures by default.

Can I convert cooking measurements?

Yes. Volume conversions include cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces, milliliters and liters for both US and UK measurements.

Is there a currency converter?

No. Currency rates change constantly and require a live data feed. Use a dedicated currency converter (XE.com, Google Finance) for current exchange rates.

Can I convert speed units for driving or aviation?

Yes. mph (miles per hour), km/h, m/s, knots and Mach numbers are all supported.
