Settings for the best quality GIF
Duration: keep GIFs under 10 seconds — longer GIFs become very large in file size and lose quality. For reaction GIFs and memes, 2-5 seconds is ideal. Width: 480px is the sweet spot — readable on mobile, small enough to load quickly. 320px for very small GIFs, 640px for full-width display. Frame rate: 15 fps gives smooth animation with half the frames of video (which is typically 24-30 fps). Use 10 fps for slower-moving content to reduce file size further. Palette optimization: our tool applies color quantization and Floyd-Steinberg dithering automatically — this reduces the 24-bit color range to 256 colors (GIF limit) while minimizing visible banding.
GIF vs video: when to use each
Use GIF when: you need an animation that plays automatically without user interaction; you are sharing on platforms that do not support video embeds; you want a self-contained file that works everywhere including email clients; the clip is short (under 10 seconds). Use video (MP4) when: quality and file size are important; the clip is longer than 10 seconds; you need audio; the platform supports video (Twitter, Slack, Discord all prefer MP4 for better quality).
FAQ
What is the maximum GIF duration?
Up to 15 seconds. For longer animations, trim the video first with our Video Trimmer, then convert to GIF. For clips over 15 seconds, consider using MP4 — it produces much smaller files at higher quality.
Why is my GIF file so large?
GIFs are inherently large because they store full color data per frame with no inter-frame compression. Reduce GIF size: lower the width (480px is enough), shorten the duration, increase frame delay (lower fps), and use video content with flat colors rather than fast-moving complex imagery.
Do GIFs support audio?
No. The GIF format does not support audio. If you need a silent video loop with audio, use MP4 with the muted attribute in HTML instead.
What video formats can I convert to GIF?
MP4, MOV, AVI, WebM, MKV and most common video formats are supported.
Can I make a GIF loop infinitely?
Yes. GIFs loop infinitely by default. You can also set a specific loop count in the options.
Is there a better alternative to GIF for web use?
Yes. An autoplaying, muted, looping MP4 video (
