How PDF Q&A works
Our AI performs Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): it first indexes the full text of your PDF into semantic chunks, then searches those chunks to find the most relevant passages for your question, and finally generates a natural language answer grounded in those specific passages. This means answers are directly derived from your document — not invented from general knowledge — making the answers accurate and traceable.
What types of questions work best
Factual questions: "What is the revenue growth mentioned in section 3?" — works excellently. Summary questions: "Summarize the key findings of chapter 2" — very effective. Comparison questions: "How does the proposed method compare to the baseline?" — works well for structured documents. List extraction: "What are all the dates mentioned in this contract?" — reliable for explicit information. Opinion or interpretation: "Is this a good investment?" — less reliable; the AI can summarize what the document says but should not be asked to make judgments not in the text.
Limitations and accuracy
The AI answers based only on the content of the uploaded PDF. It cannot answer questions about information not present in the document. For scanned PDFs without a text layer, OCR must be applied first. Tables and figures are partially supported — text within tables is readable but complex chart data may be misinterpreted. Very long PDFs (200+ pages) may have reduced accuracy due to context window limitations.

Can I ask multiple questions about the same PDF?
Yes. The PDF remains loaded for the duration of your session. Ask as many questions as needed without re-uploading.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Only if the PDF has a text layer. For image-only scanned PDFs, apply OCR first using our OCR PDF tool, then use the Q&A tool on the resulting searchable PDF.
What is the maximum PDF size?
PDFs up to 100 MB and approximately 300 pages are supported.
Are answers always accurate?
Answers are grounded in the document text, making them generally accurate. However, the AI may occasionally misinterpret ambiguous passages. Always verify critical answers against the original document.
Is my PDF stored on FileSwiftly servers?
Your PDF and all extracted text are deleted automatically after 1 hour. Nothing is permanently stored or shared.
Can it read tables and figures in the PDF?
Text within tables is readable. Complex charts, graphs and images cannot be "read" as data — the AI works with the text layer only.
